There is hot chocolate, and then there is proper hot chocolate.
The kind that is rich, glossy and deeply chocolatey. The kind you make when the weather turns cold, the evenings get darker and an ordinary cup simply will not do.
At Prestat, we are firmly in favour of making hot chocolate feel like an occasion. So, if you are in the mood for something especially indulgent, here are five simple ways to make your next cup even better.
1. Start With Real Chocolate
The easiest way to make hot chocolate taste luxurious is to begin with really good chocolate.
Rather than relying on cocoa powder alone, use finely chopped chocolate or chocolate flakes and melt them gently into warm milk. This creates a smoother, richer texture and gives the drink far more depth.
For an especially indulgent cup, choose a chocolate with a generous cocoa content and allow it to melt slowly.
No rushing. This is meant to be the relaxing part.
2. Add a Little Cream
Milk makes a lovely hot chocolate, but a splash of cream takes it somewhere else entirely.
You do not need much. A small amount stirred through the milk adds body and creates that thick, velvety texture associated with the very best café-style hot chocolate.
For the full effect, finish with softly whipped cream on top.
There is no such thing as too much ceremony when chocolate is involved.
3. Introduce a Warming Flavour
Autumn and winter are made for flavour combinations.
A pinch of cinnamon, a little vanilla, a touch of orange zest or even a hint of chilli can completely transform a cup of hot chocolate.
The key is subtlety. You still want chocolate to be the star, with the extra flavour quietly making everything feel a little more interesting.
Orange and dark chocolate is a classic. Cinnamon adds warmth. Vanilla makes everything taste softer and rounder.
And chilli is particularly good if you like your chocolate with a little drama.
4. Do Not Forget the Toppings
Hot chocolate toppings are not strictly necessary.
They are, however, highly recommended.
Try whipped cream, marshmallows, chocolate shavings, crushed biscuits or a dusting of cocoa. A drizzle of caramel works beautifully too, especially if your hot chocolate is dark and rich.
If you are making drinks for friends, put a few toppings on the table and let everyone build their own.
It turns a simple drink into something far more fun.
5. Serve It With Chocolate
Yes, chocolate with your chocolate.
We see absolutely no problem with this.
Pair your hot chocolate with truffles, pralines, chocolate-covered nuts or a favourite bar and suddenly an ordinary evening becomes a proper little occasion.
It is particularly good for slow Sunday afternoons, post-dinner treats or nights when leaving the sofa is no longer on the agenda.
